Hankin Carbonization & Energy Recovery System (Hankin CERS*)

Hankin CERS is an innovative carbonization and energy recovery system that produces high quality lump wood charcoal for pig iron production and activated carbon from harvested trees. The system recovers wood water for reuse in the process and waste heat to generate electrical power. The CERS process integrates Hankin’s long proven technology utilizing Multiple Hearth Furnace Carbonization (MHF-C), Multiple Hearth Furnace Activator (MHF-A), Vertical Kiln Dryer (VK-D), Vertical Kiln Carbonizer (VK-C), and Combustion Afterburner (AB) with State-of-the-Art auxiliary equipment (heat exchangers and air pollution control (APC) devices) to provide a complete system. The CERS complies with environmental regulations and local building codes.

Applications
This process is designed to be most cost-effective where Eucalyptus or Canadian Pine trees are harvested every 5-6 years or a continual source of chopped wood is available. Lump charcoal has been produced from trees for many centuries using outdated, inefficient technologies that are not environmentally friendly. Little consideration was given to avoid air pollution or recovery of the waste heat. Hankin is the only company with the expertise and experience in the combined unit processes to offer this innovative technology.

The initial Hankin CERS is designed to produce 120 tons/day of charcoal and 40 tons/day of activated carbon, while generating a 4 MW power supply recovered from the waste heat. This is a self sustained system. Power, wood moisture, and tar produced by the process are reused in the operation. Hankin CERS is designed for a clean, sustainable environment.
